I met some of the most interesting and amazing people at heartland. Not the rude staff, but the other kids locked away with me. There was a girl who had been there for seven months who had faded dyed hair and loved Gerard Way. There was a boy, the most talented boy I'd ever met, who could drum with his hands and make it sound like a professional drumset. There was a girl who rambled about her ex boyfriend and getting in fights, who fell head over heels with a boy running away from his family and his job at Sonic. There were so many more people but I don't have the space to tell you about them. I'm posting this because they won't let us stay in contact with each other. I have to live every day with the fact that I might never see those kids again. And it tears me up. So, my name is Evelyn and if you knew me in Heartland please message me somehow.

I was there for 2.5 months. Their whole philosophy is baised on over diagnosis and over medicating. You're treated as an inmate not as a person and the therapists are a joke. Some of the non therapeutic staff are really great people but the rest of them really don't know what their doing but are convinced that they do. They do not listen to us at all which is a key element in all mental health recovery. I have been diagnosed by medical professionals with an eating disorder. I’ve been in extensive therapy and treatmentment for this issue but when I arrived at heartland because I was currently at a technicaly healthy weight for my height I was told that I did not have an eating disorder and I recived no help for it. Uppon leaving I relapsed into my eating behaviors harder than I had since the darkest point in my eating disorder. They are by no means equipped to deal with eating disorders in any manner even if that is not the main reason for admittance. Individuality is against the rules and if you don't conform they diagnos you with more mental disorders and force more medicine upon you. People who are discharged regularly come back after only a month or so with in the time I was there I saw it multiple times, in the residential facility some people were on their 3rd or fourth stay at heartland. In accute a lot of people had been there more than 5 times. No plan is set up for life after discharge. I am doing very well now and none of my prosperity is due to heartland. Mentally I was in the same place that I was when I was admitted the only thing that kept me on track for the small amount of time that it did was the threat of being readdmitted which is not sustainable motvation as was proven by my relapses afterward. My mental state now is despite my stay at heartland. this is a place to send your child if you don't want them around not if you want them to get better don't waste your money here. Also the school program during the residential stay is a joke the goal is not to teach and learn the goal is to pass you and make you look better. If your family or child is in crisis bring them somewhere that will help you solve the problem not this place. This facility will postpone the crisis momentarily but will not do anything for assuring a stable healthy future.
